17% of Generation Z shop at a fast fashion retailer each week, 62% monthly and 11% yearly. Only 10% claim they have never purchased from fast fashion retailers (myindyx.com).
85% of Generation Z say social media impacts purchase decisions (retaildive.com)
Fast fashion is still thriving and harming the planet, but second- hand shopping is thankfully becoming more popular. Charity shops are the perfect alternative for the price range fast fashion offers, which is an incentive that’s particularly important to Gen Z. With social media massively influencing trends, the Upcycle Uprise Instagram reaches its target audience to show them how they can find their individualistic style and follow fashion trends, whilst also helping the planet.

This module was called ‘Can Graphic Design Save Lives?’ We could choose to focus on either climate change or voting. The lectures taught me a lot about identifying a problem and insight through research, and presenting this through a strategy deck. I found that an insight starts by identifying a quantitative problem within a qualitative problem, and then questioning the root of the issue that needs to be tackled.
After my first year of university focused on ideation, experimenation, and typography, this introduction to second year was a rewarding challenge, giving me a well-rounded deliverable of my first-ever brand and campaign. The UP logo uses arrows to represent both a change of clothes and a change of habits, and the red colours portray the energy and urgency of an uprising. I used ‘Milka Baked’, an imperfect stencil font, to reflect getting crafty and embracing the vintage vibe, which also appeals to the trend-seeking younger generation.
Creating my screen-printed and physically edited t-shirt poster allowed me to continue having fun with typography and experimentation – two things I thoroughly enjoy. Thank you to the lovely lady who let me tape it to her charity shop window. The upcycling techniques listed on the poster feed nicely into the Instagram, where you would find a balance of incentive, instruction and inspiration. Unfortunately, it was designed when the post thumbnails were square, so I’ve since deleted the account.
